My alter-ego, The Textile Tourist, is escaping the cold and snow by taking a trip to Kona, Hawaii and visiting the very unique Kimura's Fabrics.
This hidden gem is located on Highway 11 in Kainaliu. Walking in through the door, I felt like I was stepping back into another time. I was expecting to find plenty of Hawaiian themed fabrics - and I did. What I did not expect was the depth and breadth of the fabric collection on display.
I had to check out the Hawaiian fabrics first. While not necessarily my 'style', the distinctive patterns and colors never fail to bring a smile to my face. I especially enjoyed finding polyester fleece with Hawaiian prints!
Of course this is a great shop for quilters. There is a large selection of cotton prints, besides the many Hawaiian prints. There are also kits available for learning how to make Hawaiian style quilts. I was sorely tempted after seeing some gorgeous examples on sale in Honolulu.
It's hard to imagine how they could possibly fit more fabric into the store. There are bolts everywhere. It truly is like digging for treasure in this gem of a store. Of course I wanted to uncover a treasure of my own as a souvenir. I found a whole rack of beautiful Japanese cottons. It was a tough call, but I decided to go with a very subtle printed stripe dobby. It will make a lovely jacket. Kimura's also carries patterns, including a Hawaiian pattern line.

I'm very disapointed at the increasing number of non-related posts on this blog. I subscribe to this because I want to find out about things at Quality Sewing and Pacific Fabrics in this area. If I wanted to know about other stores - I would read their blogs and subscribe to their newsletters.
